This headstone is in Terrace End Cemetery. Mary Ann Charles was the wife of Enoch Frederick Charles, born in Sweden in 1843. By 1871 Enock owned a section at Whakarongo and was working on the construction of the Manawatū Gorge road. Mary Ann Collins was the daughter of an Irish Catholic labourer, Patrick and his wife Sarah and brought up in Foxton in a large family.

Mary and Enoch married in 1874 when Mary was 16 years old. The couple first lived in Whakarongo, then moved to Awapuni and later to Ashhurst. Between 1875 and 1897 Mary bore thirteen children, including stillborn twins. Mary died at the age of 39 from complications on the day that her last child, a daughter named Mary Ann was born.
