The first part of this homestead was built c 1882 as a lean-to house during the stumping period. The block of land on Rangitikei Line was bought by Alex McCulloch’s father, Mr A McCulloch, from Podevin and Skerman who owned the block as a partnership in 1901. Mr McCulloch Senior came form the Upper Hutt area with his family of three older sisters, one brother and Alex and Dolly, who were twins born in 1895 completing the family. This photograph was taken between 1901 and 1906. The front of the house is on a higher floor level than that of the lean-to, the rafters are 6” x 2” matai or totara and the whole house is beautifully constructed. From 1907 – 1922 the farm was leased out by the McCulloch family, Alex McCulloch farmed the property 1922 – 1962, first as a Dairy and then later as a fat lamb farm.
