Dawick’s Buffet was an unlicensed boarding house and the forerunner of the Royal Hotel. Mr Samuel Dawick established the boarding house in Main Street West in 1875 and it was later moved to the present Royal Tavern site in Rangitikei Street. The building in the photo is probably the Rangitikei Street building which was burnt down during the 1890s and replaced by the brick structure which is now in use as the Royal Tavern.
