Reliance Motors first opened circa 1942 at the back of the Astoria Ballroom on George Street by Fred Haxton. He was later joined by his son, Bruce Haxton. As the Army was allocating work at the time to local garages, Reliance became a key client of the defence force. The business also serviced cars from Grundy’s Rentals, later Mutual Rental Cars, which also located its business on George Street. After Fred Haxton retired, Bruce continued the business, with both commercial and private clients. Reliance Motors was closed in the 1980s when the lease was not renewed.
