The Art Gallery was opened by the Governor-General Lord Cobham on September 30 1959. The Gallery was administered by the Manawatu Art Gallery Society on behalf of the City Council. The building was a converted house and comprised of a single exhibition area, with office and storage areas. Today the Palmerston North Art Gallery, opened in 1977, is part of the Civic Complex in Main Street West.
