George New was a successful trainer of horses c 1926 - 1950, in Totara Road, Awapuni, then part of Maxwell’s Line. The property burnt down c 1950, and George New retired to Levin. The property was then purchased by the Palmerston North City Council.

George Willmot New (1883-1963) began as a jockey at the age of 14 and then turned to training horses. By the 1930s he was the owner of stables on part of the original ‘Highden Estate’, on Totara Rd. adjacent to the Awapuni racecourse. He had many successes and retired in 1950. From left S.
