George W New, with Thimble, winner of the 'Wellington Guineas' horse race

George Willmot New (1883-1963) began as a jockey at the age of 14 and then turned to training horses. By the 1930s he was the owner of stables on part of the original ‘Highden Estate’, adjacent to the Awapuni racecourse. He had many successes and retired in 1950. From left, G W New, owner and trainer of "Thimble", the winner of the 1947 Wellington Guineas, holds Thimble while Lady Freyberg, the Governor General's wife, presents the ribbon.
