50th Anniversary reunion group, Mangamaire School

Pupils of Mangamaire Primary School from 1937-1947 pose under the banner on the steps of Mangimare School during the school reunion. The 50th jubilee celebration was an occasion to include the official opening of the new school, on 21 June 1947. The old school which had been vacated was given a new lease of life in 1949 when it was re-erected in the new school grounds to be used as an assembly hall. In the mid-1970s Mangamaire Country School combined with Marima, Hukanui, Hamua, Konini and Nikau schools.

Child Brothers Fleet

Unidentified employees of Child Brothers Ltd stand beside their vehicles. From left: Parcel Van, Number 5 Carrier, Carrier, Commando Service Truck, Number 6 Carrier. Child Brothers Ltd, Carriers and Fuel Merchants, was established in 1919 by Edward G Child and his sons, W J Child & E W H Child. They opened the metal crushing depot and plant at the end of Albert Street near the Manawatu River c 1927. The first vehicles owned by the company were horse drawn and motor vehicles were added to the fleet during the 1920s – 1930s. The firm eventually became the largest carrying business in the Manawatu District. By 1974 the business was being conducted under the name Child Freighters Ltd and later became known as Child Metal Ltd.
