T.F. Fairbrother, headmaster of Terrace End School (1893-1922)

Mrs Harvey was the first head teacher teacher in 1884. Mr G.Nye was headmaster in 1885. He was followed by D.H. Guthrie, C.H. von Blaremberg and T. F. Fairbrother in 1893.

The original Terrace End School building was situated in Main Street in 1884. In June 1884, the School was moved to Deard's Hall in Main Street, near its current location. In September 1885, the School was moved to Terrace Street (renamed Ruahine Street in 1926).

Award given to Geoffrey Tremaine, a lawyer and Mayor of Palmerston North 1947 - 1956. "Elizabeth R [signature] Elizabeth the Second by the Grace of God of Great Britain, Ireland and the British Dominions beyond the Seas, Queen, Defender of the Faith and Sovereign of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, to our trusty and well beloved Geoffrey Tremaine Esquire. Greetings. Whereas We have thought fit to nominate and appoint you to be an Ordinary officer of the Civil Division of Our said Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. we do by these presents grant unto you the Dignity of an Ordinary Officer of Our said Order and hereby authorise you to have hold and enjoy the said Dignity and Rank of an Ordinary Officer of Our aforesaid Order together with all and singular the privileges thereunto belonging or pertaining. Given at Our Court at Saint James's under Our Sign Manual and the Seal of Our said Order, this Fifth day of June 1952 in the First year of Our Reign. 'Siberia' homestead, near Ashhurst

'Siberia' homestead, near Ashhurst

Mr Arthur Harding initially leased the property, then in 1906 his wife Isabella bought the land and together they build the 18 roomed 'Siberia' homestead. Also built on the property were stables, garages, sheds, stores for livestock and agricultural produce and a second house for employees. In 1941 a small airforce trainer aeroplane crashed into the upstairs nursery, demolishing part of the house and severely damaging the rest. The house was burnt down in 1961 due to an electrical fault.

Foxton Racing Club stewards

The Manawatu Racing Club was established on land whose use was granted by its Maori owners, and races were held from 1855 onwards. The acquisition of the Awahou Block by the Crown and the prospect of the sale of the land caused fear of loss of the course, and in 1865 a petition signed by local Pakeha and Maori was presented to the Provincial Council asking that the land be appropriated. This building, and others on the site, were built in 1915 for the Feilding Borough Council, who at the time operated the Municipal Electricity Department. The photograph is just prior to the buildings demolition to allow access between a new Council building and a garage area which had been built in 1972.

The Youth Institution at Linton, was built for just under $5 million, and introduced a new concept in “treating’ its inmates. The Institution accommodates 96 permanent male residents between 15–23 years of age, and also has a 24-cell remand unit for males of the same age group. This picture was taken after a sudden flood in the Pohangina Valley. At the peak of the flood, at about 9 pm, 12 March 1975, the river was more than 4 metres above normal flow. Pohangina Valley is rural district north of Ashhurst. It is named after the river that flows through it and is about 50 Kilometres long.

Huntly Private Hotel, 225 Featherston Street

The house was built in 1911 for Adam Burges who named it after his hometown near Aberdeen in Scotland. It had 14 rooms and originally had its own plant for generating electricity. After Mrs Burges's death the house was sold and functioned as a boarding house / private hotel until 1970, when the site was converted into a used car yard. In 1984 the home was bought by Gerald and Gerda Borgonje, transported to 56 James Line in 6 sections, and rebuilt and renovated. It was the private residence of the Borgonje family until 2010. The original site in Featherston Street is now occupied by Valentines Restaurant. Huntly House was bought in 2016 by the Parsons family and subsequently relocated to Auckland in January 2017.

This photograph is thought to have been taken on John Henson’s farm on Pennys Line, where he harvested 400 acres of rye grass, crested dog's tail and grain. The traction engine was purchased by Gifford and Henson, who worked in partnership as contractors, about 1902.

The Miranui Flaxmill, near Shannon, was the largest flaxmill built in New Zealand, in 1907. The view shows the bleaching paddocks, where flax hung on drying fences and lay on ground to dry. Stacks were also used for drying. Part of the scutching shed is in the foreground.

P.W.D. Sawmill - Mangahao Electric Power Scheme

The P.W.D. [thought to be Public Works Department] sawmill in the Arapete area of the Power project. The Mangahao Power Station provides hydroelectric power and is situated near the town of Shannon. It serves Wellington, Horowhenua, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, and the Wairarapa. After being delayed by the first world war construction began in late 1919 and the station opened in November 1924.
