Awapuni Hospital, Maxwells Line

The Rest Home opened 1914-1915 as an 'Old Men's Home', under the control of the Palmerston North Hospital Board. It soon became known as the Old People's Home, and then Awapuni Hospital. It closed as a hospital in December 1989, because of falling patient numbers, its distance from the Public Hospital and its earthquake prone buildings. It is now the home of Te Hotu Manawa o Rangitāne ki Manawatu Marae.

Postcard of The Square

Postcard of The Square

This postcard is of The Square - Main Street is shown running through the middle of the image. Prominent features of this postcard are the band rotunda and the old Post Office. The original, smaller, structure was built 1899 and moved to the Victoria Esplanade in 1907. This rotunda was built in 1907, but pulled down in 1956 to make way for the Hopwood Tower. The old Post Office (corner of Main Street East and The Square, now Highflyers Restaurant & Bar) was built in 1906 and was Palmerston North’s fourth, replacing the wooden structure that sat on the same site. This postcard is decorated with the words, "Greetings from Palmerston North".

Mauriceville School Class Photograph

Mauriceville School Class Photograph

The first Mauriceville West School was a tiny slab building constructed by the Scandinavian settlers in 1875, on the Education reserve at the centre of the town. It was replaced in 1877 by a small pit-sawn timber school house and in 1886 by the two-roomed structure shown here, which was used at least until the 1950's. The headmaster shown here is probably Johnson. School attendance was never good at Mauriceville in its early days, when the syllabus was primarily concerned with anglicising the young Scandinavians.
