Coronation Monument and Band Rotunda in the Square

The statue on the left of the photograph is part of the commemoration of Edward VII, built in August 1902. The top of it is now part of the fountain that once graced the area in front of the old DIC building (now the City Library). The fountain now lives in the portion of the Square closest to Broadway Avenue, near the Ladies' Rest.

The band rotunda on the right was built in 1899.

The shops in the background include: [1] United Farmers Cooperative Association (1895-1908). [2] Millar and Giorgi, built in 1902 - the wooden building shown in the card was burnt down in 1910 and replaced. [3] The Club Hotel, with the brick additions completed in 1905. [4] J Watchorn's drapery, which became W Durward's in 1907 [5] The Pegden Building and Nash Building. [6] The Occidental Hotel, built around 1888, burnt down first in 1891 and again in 1927. Also the site of the Municipal Library, 1927-1965. Post marked 5 February 1906

The band of the New Zealand Army on parade at Linton Camp. The occasion was the presentation of Long Service and Good Conduct Medals to nine soldiers. Major J Carson escorted the inspecting officer Brigadier, M R Kennedy, MBE.

Child Brothers metal crushing depot and plant, Albert Street

Child Brothers Ltd, Carriers and Fuel Merchants, was established in 1919 by Edward G Child and his sons, W J Child & E W H Child. They opened the metal crushing depot and plant at the end of Albert Street near the Manawatu River c1927. The business later became known as Child Metal Ltd.

Cricket Pavilion at Palmerston North Boys' High School

This cricket pavilion was new when this photograph was taken in 1981. It was built to replace the former pavilion, which had been damaged by fire. At the left of the new pavilion is the Jubilee room, built to commemorate the school's 75th Jubilee.

Wayne Hudson on his BMX

The Manawatu BMX Club opened a new 270 metre track at Vautier Park on Sunday, 14 March 1982. The new track is set in a natural amphitheatre, so it provides total track viewing for all spectators. Wayne was the Manawatu 15 year old group champion and is shown here on the new track.

The newly completed Civic Centre, for the Palmerston North City Council, was completed in 1979, and staff moved in January 1980. Office space was designed to be open plan.

Milk powder factory, Longburn

The Manawatu Co-operative Dairy Company Ltd was established in 1960. To cope with the enlarged intake of milk and cream a continuous butter making system was planned and a new butter factory was opened in 1968. At the time, it was the third largest dairy co-operative in New Zealand, having an ultimate capacity of 20,000 tons of butter a year, a whole milk capacity of 3000, 000 gallons of milk daily and production value of $11,000,000 annually.

Mr William Park, Eighth Mayor of Palmerston North

The eighth Mayor of Palmerston North was Mr William Park, who held office for two terms, in 1893-1894 and 1894-1895. He was born at Port Chalmers near Dunedin and was the first person born in New Zealand to become Mayor of Palmerston North. In 1882 he set up a business as a bookseller in the Square. He played a prominent part in civic affairs for many years. He was a fellow of the Royal Horticultural Society (England) and was largely responsible for beautifying the Square Gardens and other reserves in town. Mr W Park became Mayor at a time when the Borough was in financial difficulties, but a curtailment of expenditure and judicious administration greatly improved matters before he went out of office. He died in 1938.

The Manawatu River runs through the Gorge. The road can be discerned on the left hand side, which provides the main transport link to Hawkes Bay from the Manawatu, but there is no evidence of the rail line on the left, opened in 1891.

Construction of Second Dam at Turitea

The work on the second dam, which replaced the first, wooden structure, began in October 1906 (see Evening Standard 1/10/1906, page 4) and the water was turned on in August 1907 (E.S. 3/03/1909, page 5). In 1912, its height was raised to 50 feet, the enlarged dam being officially opened on February 17, 1913. The man in the second from left in the back row is Mr Samuel Jickell, who was the Palmerston North Borough Engineer and on his left is Mr Christian Voss.

Nannestad's residence, Te Awe Awe Street

Jacob Nannestead, a local sawmiller, built this house in 1892, on a property that encompassed the Hokowhitu Lagoon. He sold it to J.H.P. Strang in 1903, and the house was extensively renovated twice. It is now known as Caccia Birch House and is used as function centre.

Construction of the Mangahao Electric Power Scheme

A steam tractor hauls what could be a turbine for the new station. The Mangahao Power Station is a hydroelectric power station near the town of Shannon, Horowhenua. After being delayed by World War One, access roading and foundation testing was started by late 1919 and the station opened in November 1924. It makes use of Mangahao River, through a series of tunnels and piplines totaling 4.8 kilometers, in the Tararua Ranges. Mangahao Power Station became the power station for Wellington, Horowhenua, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, and the Wairarapa. As of 2012, it is jointly owned and operated by Todd Energy and King Country Energy.

The Red House Co-operative store was established initially by Thomas Westwood 1 August 1984. It stood on the corner of Main and Whyte streets. By 1905 – 1906 a Mr M H Walker was the proprietor.
