Elliot Quarters, at Linton Army Camp, were officially opened on 14 April, 1980. The Quarters are named after the Reverend Keith Elliot VC, who won his Victoria Cross for acts of courage in the Western Desert in 1942.

The Presbyterian Church was established in Palmerston North in 1872. The first church was built on this site in 1878, to be replaced by this building, of timber Gothic structure in 1893. This building was in turn replaced by the present building completed in 1957.

This postcard comes from a series depicting various holds from the art of ju-jitsu. This card is labelled, "'Ju-jitsu' Defence for Ladies". Florence Flossie Le Mar would become a star with the same kind of display in the film The Lady and the Hooligan. This film showed all around New Zealand around 1910 - including a show in Palmerston North at the Zealandia Hall.

Dam Under Construction - Mangahao Electric Power Scheme

Shown here is a view of the partially constructed dam. It is thought dregging took place below the dam. The Mangahao Power Station provides hydroelectric power and is situated near the town of Shannon. It serves Wellington, Horowhenua, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, and the Wairarapa. After being delayed by the first world war construction began in late 1919 and the station opened in November 1924.

This photograph shows the construction of the middle arch of the second Fitzherbert Bridge. A third bridge was built in 1987 due to mounting traffic constraints. The view, taken from the Esplanade gardens, looks across to the Aokautere and Massey Agricultural College side.

Cherry trees were first planted along Victoria Drive in Palmerston North's gardens in the 1920’s. They were a popular attraction and special trains ran from Wellington bringing sight seers. Most of the original trees have since been replaced.

Technical High School

The Technical School main building on Duke Street (now Princess Street) was built in 1909. In 1931 the main building was strengthened and the gables were removed. The Palmerston North Technical School occupied the building until 1956. It is now used by the Universal College of Learning (UCOL).

Mr and Mrs Stan Hunt

Mr Stan Hunt was the eldest son of Herbert Hill Hunt (Manawatu County Councillor for 22 years, from 1910). The woman in the photograph is Marion Tennant (nee Smith). They married in Whanganui in August 1912. They farmed on the north-west corner of Tompkins and Milner Lines, which was originally his father's property. They had five children - Herbert, Charles, Phyllis, John Tennant and Ivan.

A Parkinson and Rasmussen - Deep Well Borers well and tower with water spouting out of the ground. Some workers and dignitaries are grouped around. The company worked extensively for the Palmerston North City Council, sinking successful wells in Heretaunga Street, Vogel Street and at the gasworks. They also worked around the lower North Island. They later became R W Parkinson and Co.
