A branch of the Order of St John began in Palmerston North in 1900. In the background are the commercial businesses of K H Syme and Co. The Presbyterian Church was established in Palmerston North in 1872. The first church was built on this site in 1878, to be replaced by this building, of timber Gothic structure in 1893. This building was in turn replaced by the present building completed in 1957.
A large crowd gathered to plant a tree in the middle of the triangular picket enclosure (centre of photo), in Broad Street (Broadway Avenue) near the junction with The Square, Palmerston North. The Bank of Australasia is in the background.

A new Civic Centre, consisting of Council offices and Council Chamber, was constructed for the Palmerston North City Council 1976-1979.
Major General Brian Poananga (Front) with members of the Royal Fiji Military, outside the Duty Centre, Linton Army Camp. This new duty centre was built by sixteen members of the Royal Fiji Military and six members of the Tongan Defence Force. The Centre, officially opened by Major General Poananga, includes 6 bedrooms, 5 cells, a toilet block, a guard room, a common room, and interview room and a sentry box.
This photograph is of two little boys perched on one of the cannons in the Square. The photographer is looking east towards the PDC building (now the Plaza). This gun was installed in 1909 and removed during the 1940s. Cannons were purchased by the Government in 1879 and installed at Fort Ngahauranga overlooking Port Nicholson, Wellington Harbour. They were obsolete by 1900. Two of these cannons were acquired by the Palmerston North Borough Council in 1909 for display in the Square to the delight of many children. By 1939, the Council decided the cannons had outlived their usefulness and sold them to a scrap dealer who cut up the steel undercarriages and buried the barrels in an Albert Street property. Palmerston North Girls' High School was opened in Fitzherbert Avenue in 1920. Previously girls and boys were educated together at Palmerston North High School.
This house was built by Elliot Warburton (d.1922) in the 1870s, and sold by him to the Government for Defence Offices in 1915. Maud (later Mrs Dalgety) and Mollie (later Mrs Abraham) Warburton, are pictured under the trees in sailor dresses. Elliot Warburton, a solicitor, arrived in Palmerston North in 1875 as a young man of 27 and married Miss Budd in 1882.
Production line staff preparing milk biscuits for manufacture and sale. The biscuits were developed by the Institute to distribute to children in under-developed areas particularly in Pacific and East Asian areas.
H Robinson's Veterinary Forge was located on the corner of Main and Cook Streets in Foxton. H Robinson is listed in the Wise’s Directory of 1902 as a Blacksmith.
Shown here is the dam under construction, a crane can be seen in the back ground and steel construction in the river bed. The Mangahao Power Station provides hydroelectric power and is situated near the town of Shannon. It serves Wellington, Horowhenua, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, and the Wairarapa. After being delayed by the first world war construction began in late 1919 and the station opened in November 1924.

Town Clerks attending their annual conference proor to the Municipal Conference in Nelson. James Robert Hardie was Town Clerk for Palmeston North Borough (and City) Council 1917 – 1954. He is seated in the front row, 5th from the left.
In the centre can be seen the Ballance Bridge,over the Manawatu River, opened in 1904 and since replaced. On the right of the road leading into the Gorge is the Palmerston North to Napier railway line that opened in 1891. The tunnels seen were daylighted (removed) in 2008 to allow for larger freight cars.
The "Weka" locomotive engine was built by James Davidson of Dunedin in 1876. It was in use from 1889 till 1922.
