John Tiffin Stewart

J T Stewart (1827-1913) was a surveyor and one of the earliest Europeans to see the 'Papaioea' clearing, on which Palmerston North was established, c 1858. Locally, he surveyed the Te Ahu Turanga Block (purchased from Rangitāne) and the route for the Manawatū Gorge Road.

Municipal Opera House, Church Street

The Municipal Opera House of Palmerston North, designed by F J Wilson and built by J Trevor and Sons, was erected in 1904-1905 and opened 12 July 1905. In 1952 it was condemned unsafe by the Palmerston North City Council and was strengthened and remodelled both inside and out in 1955. It was sold by the PNCC to a businessman in 1996 and demolished.

A group of ladies are shown enjoying the walk around the lily pond in the Victoria Esplanade Gardens. The Victoria Esplanade underwent a variety of improvements under Peter Black, the Curator of Reserves from 1908-1946. These included various footpaths, Victoria Drive, mass plantings (notably of the cherry trees and phoenix palms), the creation of a pergola, a tea kiosk, the lily pond the RSA paddling pool and a begonia hothouse (now known as the “Peter Black Conservatory”).

The Rongotea Co-operative Dairy Co. Ltd was founded 1895. The brick building is the new dairy factory, built in 1911, the third in Rongotea. On the right is the offices of the Rongotea co-op Co.rongotea Post Office. The photograph was published 20 September 1911.

River in Flood - Mangahao Electric Power Scheme

This picture showes a small flood roaring out of the large pass tunnel, Mangahao Lower Dam. The Mangahao Power Station provides hydroelectric power and is situated near the town of Shannon. It serves Wellington, Horowhenua, Taranaki, Hawkes Bay, and the Wairarapa. After being delayed by WWI, construction began in late 1919 and the station opened in November 1924.

The occasion was the 50th jubilee of Palmerston North High School. Palmerston North High School was the first secondary school established in Palmerston North in 1902.

'Miranui' Flaxmill locomotive crossing the Tokomaru Stream, near Shannon

The locomotive and tramlines, owned and operated by A & L Seifert’s Flaxmilling Company, were employed hauling trucks of flax from the Makerua swamp to the huge Miranui flaxmill, eatblished 1907. Miranui was the only mill in New Zealand to use a locomotive for hauling flax, but the engine proved too heavy for the swampy ground and was soon replaced by teams of horses.

He was awarded the gold medal for the most scientific boxing in the tournament. According to papers from the time, he won the competition against his competitor, Mr Ongley. He had been the New Zealand "welter weight" champion and runner-up in the Sydney Australiasian Championship in 1909.

192 Broadway Avenue

The house at 192 Broadway Avenue was built by W H Cook, one of the two Cook brothers who opened a saw milling operation during the late 19th Century. William Cook died on the 9 November, 1937. The house was occupied by various members of the family until 1970. At this time surrounding grounds were bulldozed to make way for offices and shops, and by 1998 the house was the legal offices of Wadham Goodman, Barristers and Solicitors.
