This may be Mr John Jarvis. According to his obituary, he was "one of the oldest settlers of the Manawatu" and "most prominently identified with the Manawatu and West Coast A&P Association and with pig and poultry breeding associations." He came to New Zealand in 1874 from Kent with his wife and three children, though only two of the children survived the trip. His family expanded to eight children in subsequent years. He farmed in Rongotea until 1911 when he moved to Palmerston North. He passed away in 1925 at 80 years of age.
