Postcard of The Square

Postcard of The Square

The postcard shows the people of Palmerston enjoying the facilities of The Square. The photograph must have been taken after 1907 because of the presence of the second, larger, band rotunda. However, it cannot have been taken later than 1913 because the wooden All Saints Church is clearly visible. The Evening Standard building has a large sign that reads Ocean Accident - this sign further narrows the year to as this is the name of an insurance company who kept premises in The Square until 1910. The cannon is one of two that were placed in The Square in 1909, being surplus to Defence Department requirements.
