Colour Postcard of "South View" of the Square

Colour Postcard of "South View" of the Square

This postcard of the Square shows its south side, from Church Street West to just after Main Street West. Most of the building's names are obscured, but the distinctive architecture of the old Municipal Chambers (now Square Edge) identifies it as the eighth building from the left. The Coles Building (now the PNCC Central Administration Building) is also visible fourth from right. Note that there is a train running through the middle of the postcard. The small structure in the left foreground of the image is the old stables and several horse carts are shown waiting in front of it. In the middle of the image is a fountain - this was eventually combined with the Coronation Monument (not erected at this time) to create the Coronation Fountain that currently stands in the corner of the Square near Broadway Avenue. There is a note on the front of this postcard that reads, "Note the fishpond exactly opposite the tearoom windows".
