Rangitikei Street

This photograph shows a wide angle view of Rangitikei Street in the 1920s. From left: Mounsey and Co Auctioneers and Land Agents; Adam Burges Ford Cars; P & D Duncan Implements; A Burges Garage; The New Royal Hotel. The original Royal Hotel was pulled down in 1915 to may way for the Bank of New Zealand (corner of The Square and Rangitikei Street). This second building remains in the same location today [2015]. Standing in front of the hotel are Charles E Warden and S W R Evans. The business of Adam Burges, situated on the corner of Queen and Rangitikei Streets, was established in 1892 and carried on by him until his death in 1918. His sons Duncan and Alan then ran the business until 1942 when they closed down and sold the property to Government Life Insurance, Smith and Smith, The Commercial Bank and others.
