Ashhurst School, Head Teachers' Log Book, 21 May 1897 - 22 February 1909

Ashhurst School opened in September 1879, with Mr F. Whibley as the temporary head teacher. The first permanent head teacher was Mr Alfred Gower (1880-1887). The head teachers during the years covered in this log book were Mr Buckler (c.1889-1901) and Mr W. Andrew (c.1901-1921). The school typically had a roll of between 165 and 180 pupils during this period.

Ashhurst School, Head Teacher's Log Book, 9 February 1880 - 28 October 1887

Ashhurst School opened in September 1879, with Mr F. Whibley as the temporary head teacher. The first permanent head teacher was Mr Alfred Gower (c.1880-1887). In addition to documenting the activities of the school, this log book also includes: School Inspectors’ Reports; an inventory of school furniture, 1885; and an inventory of school requisites, undated.

'Batchelor party' at Puketotara estate

The Puketotara Estate was located on the western bank of the Oroua River in the vicinity of its junction with the Manawatūorou River. The Pascal brothers, Claud and John, emigrated to New Zealand from France. They were involved in the flax industry c. 1890 - 1906. The image shows employees and friends of Pascal Brothers at Puketotara Station, 1886, entitled ‘Batchelors’ Party’. All people are unidentified, but it is thought that it includes Claud and John Pascal. The pou are from the old Puketotara Pa and were used at the gateway to the station

Miniature monument in honour of New Zealand and Polish soldiers

This miniature monument was created to honour New Zealand and Polish soldiers who fell in the fight for common ideals in World War Two. It is made of aluminium and wood in an art deco style. The plate is inscribed, "For our freedom and yours, Tobruk, El Gazala, Monte Cassino", with a stylized Polish and New Zealand army emblem below. The underside is inscribed, " Made by Polish forces No. 175 Wyk. Komp. Warszl". It was designed by a soldier of the Polish Third Carpathian Infantry Division. It was one of the gifts made by Polish soldiers to give to New Zealand as an expression of their heartfelt gratitude for New Zealand's treatment of the Polish children refugees and appreciation of the great friendship shown to the soldiers through the sending of correspondence and parcels, during World War Two. This item is held by Te Manawa, Palmertson North.

Friendship bracelet from Polish soldier

This brass friendship bracelet is a model of a friendship ring, and created as a symbol of Polish - New Zealand friendship. The inside of the bracelet is inscribed, "To everlasting friendship New Zealand 1941". It also has a silver metal plaque inside inscribed, "Wykonal Hajdukiewicz Wlad 2. Komp. Warszt. E. M. Italia 1945". It was gifted to New Zealand by Polish soldiers at the end of World War Two. Gifts were made by Polish soldiers to give to New Zealand as an expression of their heartfelt gratitude for New Zealand's treatment of the Polish children refugees and appreciation of the great friendship shown to the soldiers through the sending of correspondence and parcels, during the war. Huia Mackrell

Huia Heslop Mackrell in uniform, on service overseas during World War One. Said to be taken prior to Gallipoli so may be in Egypt.

Huia Mackrell (1893 - 1958) was an engineer who worked for Councils and private businesses, including the Palmererston North City Council as a building inspector 1936 - 1946. He also served in World War Two.

The All Saints Children's Home was established in 1906 to provide a home for children who were orphaned, destitute or dotherwise unable to be cared for within their families. The home in Ada Street was the first and operated until 1931 when a new home in Pascal Street was built. Later homes operated in Ngaio Street, then Park Road.
