The Grand Hotel

The Grand Hotel

The Grand Hotel was designed by J G Maddison in the Second Empire style, and constucted in 1906 by Trevor and Sons. It replaced the Provincial Hotel which burned down in the same year. As an hotel it hosted many important vistors, including two Royal visits (1927 and 1954). In 1985 the hotel was converted into commercial offices and retail space. While the interior of the building retains little of its former self the exterior is largely as built, although the turret was removed as an earthquake risk.

This photo was taken by Maicah, Flynn and Karlos of the Manawatū Home Educator's network as part of a session with the Heritage team at Palmerston North City Library.

Eketahuna Hotel

Those who first settled in Eketahuna were mostly Swedish, who arrived in 1873 to clear what was known as the Forty Mile Bush. However, by the end of the seventies the name had reverted to the Maori one of Eketahuna which means, 'to run aground on a sandbank'; so named by the 'tangata whenua' to describe that location where their waka or canoes could travel no further up the Makakahi River, which bisects the township. This photograph showing the Eketahuna Hotel is reproduced in Petersen's hisory of Scandinavian settlement in the Forty Mile Bush.

Silver Entree & Dinner Forks, Hastie Hotel

Silver Entree & Dinner Forks, Hastie Hotel

Mr. T.V. Brown built the Feilding Hotel in 1875. It was the town's first licenced hotel since the Earl of Denbigh was initially built as an accommodation house and only later became licensed. Its opening meant that Feilding residents no longer had to make the rough journey to Awahuri when they wanted a drink. By 1880 James Hastie had acquired the Feilding Hotel after which it was referred to as Hastie's Hotel. After James Hastie's death, his wife Martha ran the hotel for several years.
