A close examination of this original print shows that the names on the buildings correspond almost exactly to the names of the business proprietors listed in the Times on 24 November 1884 (see Petersen 1952, p 101). However, the sixth shop past the Clarendon Hotel bears the sign "C Miller, General Store" whereas the Times lists this shop as being occupied by P Dinnin. This is no 'Topping' sign on the Beehive Store, so this photo must have been taken after November 1884 (J Topping sold in 1884 to P Dinnin). The Standard of 23 November 1885 carries an advertisement which shows Dinnin as the proprietor of the Beehive Store.
