The building with people out front is a vegetable shop. Pioneer Highway was originally Foxton Line. The name was changed in 1955 as a memorial to the city's pioneers of many nationalities who arrived by this route, which was the only means of access at the time except by canoe up the river. This photograph is part of a series shot from a moving train. See also 2014N_St47_008750, 2014N_St47_008752 and 2014N_Rm27_007848.
