Broadcast on Manawatu People's Radio, 13th September 2022. 2 of 3. Friars Grammar School in Wales. School structure in Britain. Woodwork, recently carved furniture. The 11+ exam in Britain, grammar schools and secondary modern schools. Apprenticed as a fitter and turner. Broke apprenticeship after 4½ years to do a Higher National Diploma. Getting paid, pay packets. Skipped 2 years’ national service by going into the merchant navy for four years. In the engine room, travelling to S America and back. Later with the Cunard on the Queen Mary. Trials engineer with Hawker-Siddeley, computer simulations in early 1960s. Missiles for Vulcan bombers. Liked teaching, so on to teacher training. Taught for a year, then to QEC in Palmerston North and on to the polytech. Took up woodwork as a hobby, and also doing some metalwork.
