Miss Hawaii 1978 - Elizabeth Lindsey
- Description
-
These images were taken for the November 26th, 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published.
The short article served as a caption and read: “Beautiful flowers and a beautiful ambassadress from a tropical island. What more did Palmerston North need last week? Our photographer caught Miss Hawaii 1978, Elizabeth Lindsey, during her whistlestop visit to the city on Wednesday. She is pictured taking in the sight of the city's flowers in а "spare" five minutes between a session at radio 2ZA and a meeting with Palmerston North's mayor, Mr Brian Elwood. Miss Lindsey arrived in Palmerston North on Tuesday afternoon as part of a promotion trip for Air New Zealand and Hawaii-Air. She only arrived in Auckland last Saturday (November 18), but managed to visit Napier, Hastings, Palmerston North, Wanganui, Wellington and Auckland again before she flew off to Tahiti for more promotion work, and then on to her tropical home of Hawaii. She then heads on to Los Angeles and a Canadian tour.
Miss Lindsey had already toured extensively through the United States, doing the same sort of work, before her quick trip to New Zealand - and she was only crowned Miss Hawaii about April. The tour's purpose is to promote Hawaii and its eight islands as a holiday destination. It was the first time a Hawaiian beauty queen had been brought to New Zealand to do this. Miss Lindsey was accompanied by a troupe of professional entertainers (who travel world-wide promoting Hawaii) as well as the Australia- New Zealand sales manager for Hawaii-air, Mr Micheal Walters. The Palmerston North stopover of 20 hours was the longest Miss Lindsey had in New Zealand. Her impression of the city as our photographer asked her to pose for a photograph.in the Square at 9 a.m.? "Brr.. it's cold." Unfortunately; she wasn't here later in the day when the temperature got into the mid 20's.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
