Broadcast on Manawatu People's Radio, 6th September 2022. Part 1 of 3.  Came to NZ in 1965. Work and study in England beforehand. Attracted to NZ due to trout fishing. Teaching at Queen Elizabeth College and the Polytech, then full time at the Polytech. Adjustments to NZ, 6 o’clock closing. Fishing in NZ compared to UK. Welsh language. Drinking problem, stopped and turned to woodwork, carving ornate furniture. Teaching in NZ - curriculum compared to the UK. Applied mechanics. Old schoolmate, a Lion who came out on tour. The class system. Experience of 6 o’clock swill. UK drinking more social and no gender segregation. NZ weekends. Friday late-night shopping. Changes at polytech up to retirement in 2000. Apprentices and NZED students. Ministry of Works students. Saddle Road. Evening classes.
