This image was taken (but not published) by the Evening Standard between the 29th and 31st of January 1983. It depicts a moment of action from the 3-day match between the New Zealand and Australian under 25s women’s cricket teams. Ultimately, the match was drawn.
The match report read: “A PEDESTRIAN rate of scoring stifled the second day's play in the New Zealand - Australia women's under-25 cricket test in Palmerston North yesterday.
Resuming at 7 for 1 in reply to New Zealand's 213, Australia crawled its way to 226 for 8 before declaring its first innings closed 30 minutes before stumps.
New Zealand had eliminated 10runs of this deficit by stumps, but in the process had lost the valuable wicket of Nicky Turner for 1.
An indicator of the day's events was revealed when the first eight overs of the morning were maidens. Australia took 366 minutes to post its 200.
The core of its batting was Trish Dawson (58), who posted her 50 in 80 minutes, and wicket keeper Judy Esmond (45 not out). At one time during her long innings Esmond sat on 4 for over an hour, and during her stay played out 18 maiden overs.
A marathon bowling spell for New Zealand came from Sue Brown who took 1 for 49 off 43overs. It was her opening partner, Mary Connell, who had the greatest success, claiming 4 for 50 off 27 overs.”
