Walter Valentine McEwen (1891-1947) was the son of John and Annie McEwen and the grandson of David McEwen, settler, of Karere. He was born in Karere and attended Tiakitahuna and Longburn schools. He worked on the family farm and the only time he is reputed to have left the district was to serve in the First World War. In 1922 he married Marjorie Mason (1893-1986) and they had two children.
This image is derived from a copy negative, made from a photograph loaned by Michael Fitzsimons of Karere in 1970. The original photograph is not held by the Ian Matheson City Archives.
