Description

The McGillicuddy Serious Party was a political party active between 1984 and 1999 which aimed to poke fun at New Zealand's political system. The party stood candidates in both the general and local elections. In 1993, the party recieved 0.61% of the general election vote. When the party withdrew it's registration on the party list, the party leader, Graeme Cairns, voluntarily placed himself in medieval stocks so party members could throw rotten fruit at him.

Graeme Cairns - also known as "Laird McGillicuddy", or "The Laird of Hamilton" - is pictured here in the Square c1987. The Wizard of New Zealand was also in attendance.
