“P.N. Team Leads Rally After Manawatu Stage”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the June 25th 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published with no caption. The man is not believed to be Brian Green or Robert Orr, but is not named in the article.
An excerpt from the article read: “The Palmerston North rally team of Brian Green and Robert Orr now leads the Pall Mall Rally Championship, after the second round of the competition was held in the Manawatu area last weekend. One hundred and four cars started the second round from the central parking area of the square last Saturday but only 72 made it to the finish at the Awapuni racecourse the next day after some 20 hours of hard driving. Drama filled most of the stages, as is usual with car rallying. First stage of the rally was a spectator thriller at Higgins metal pit, along the Manawatu River bank. Hundreds of spectators enjoyed the sight of New Zealand's top rallying teams, hurling their cars around the loose metal stage, with only fractions of a. second separating the top drivers times.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
