“Armed Police Alarm Citizens”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the November 19th, 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published.
The short article read: “No, it's not what it seems - but people in Cuba Street, Palmerston North the other day, certainly thought it was. The sight of armed police sprawling in bushes while others, toting rifles, lurked in the doorways of the old Palmerston North fire station was an alarming sight to passersby. But it was just an exercise, involving two armed offenders who were holding a young woman ‘hostage’. The police, numbering about 30, got their men (naturally), after a blank shot or two had been fired. The two men gave in without a struggle, menaced by snarling police dogs and the muzzles of several firearms. Here one of the armed offenders' squad crouches in a doorway at the rear of the fire station, waiting for the offenders to make next move.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
