This photograph shows the remains of a Royal Australian Airforce F-111 swing-wing aircraft after being taken to a hangar by truck. It crashed at the southern end of the runway. The plane was taking part in a Tasmanex exercise, the work crew members landed safely in a capsule close beside the badly damaged aircraft. The pilot, Flying Officer Mark Kelly, suffered back injuries while Flight Lieutenant Alan Curr was discharged from Palmerston North Hospital on the same day.
