These images were taken by Mark Lapwood for the Evening Standard, the first of which was published on the 14th od October 1988 with the caption: “Crunch time for Kiwi under-19 rugby league wing Jason Chang who has Australian wing Tim Brasher to get through and is about to get another Aussie on his back. Australia won 54-16.”
Excerpts from Mike Behrens’ article read: “AUSTRALIA'S secondary schoo1 rugby league team gave a great display of power football to beat the New Zealand under-19 team 54-16 at the Showgrounds Oval in Palmerston North yesterday. After inspecting the pitch before the game, the Aussies said it was the best ground they'd ever been on and they played like it.
Within 10 minutes they were up 12-0 and the crowd and the Kiwis looked set to be watching the green and golds running all day.”
…
“First half scorers for Australia were wingers Kurt Landers and Stephen Burns, Munro, Duffy and centre Tim Brasher.
New Zealand had a lonely penalty from halfback Justin Nixon and had shown no imagination on attack with the little possession it had been allowed.”
…
“Australia came again with a try to Brett Horsnell and New Zealand got its second when replacement forward Desmond Maea ran cleverly to put in second-rower Tukere Barlow.
Duffy got a second, but the Kiwis came back again when wing Dave Tranter finally got a ball at the advantage line and showed pace to score a good try wide out.”
