This image was taken (but not published) by the Evening Standard between the 27th and 29th of December 1980. It depicts a moment of action from the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield 2-day match between the Central Districts and North Shore women’s cricket teams. The match was drawn.
Match report by David Ogilvie: “Central Districts found its own personal heroines in yesterday’s second day of the Hallyburton Johnstone national women’s cricket tournament.
Sixteen-year-old Sally Groves, playing in her first HBJ match, produced a stunning innings of 33 not out in the final hour and a bit to thwart North Shore's hope of an outright and to give her team back its self-respect after a disastrous first day and a half at only its second tournament. Her able partner was Liz Signal and the pair batted through the last 24-overs to save the game.”
