In the 1976 flood, water approached Palmerston North (top left) from Feilding, swelled the Mangaone Stream and flowed down the spillway towards the Taonui Basin in Kairanga. The spillway was used for the first time to protect the city by sending the main flow around the boundaries. This photograph was published in the Manawatu Evening Standard 29 June 1976.
