This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 20 December 1962, "Two members of the English Empire Games swimming team are at present visiting Palmerston North on their way home from the Games. John Martin (nearest the camera), a sales assistant, and Stanley Clark, a London policeman, are earning extra money digging drains. Both swimmers are from London. On their way back to London they will travel to Fiji and America. Both are bronze medalists in the 110 yards and 220 yards team relays, and are staying with Mr Clark's sister in Palmerston North." (notice the jandals and the pick-axe!)
