This image ran in the Manawatu Evening Standard on 11 June 1959. Winifred Atwell was an internationally famous 'boogie-woogie' pianist and visited Palmerston North with her husband Mr L V Levisohn for a concert at the Opera House. Winnie, as her fans called her, was extremely popular in Australia and NZ through the 1950s and 1960s and she toured both countries often. Her records sold well and her mixture of cheeky fun and classical expertise was irresistible. Winifred Atwell was born in Trinidad and rose to fame in England. She and her husband eventually settled permanently in Sydney. Her Palmerston North show at the Opera House on June 11 1959 was a sell-out.
