Description

Local historians weekly "Back Issues" article in the Manawatū Standard. Whakarongo settlement carries the name of a nineteenth century Rangitanē woman of courage and resilence. Whakarongo was raised as a whāngai at Te Kuripaka pa by her uncle, Te Aokautere, a prominant Rangitāne leader. She was taken to Kaipara during a conflict where she lived until her brother took her back to the Manawatū in her later years. Whakarongo settlement, just north of Palmerston North, was so named to honour this Rangitāne wahine.
