“Dream Machine Comes To City”

These images were taken for the June 18th 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published with the caption “The proud new owner and his ‘super-bike’.”
An excerpt from the article read: “When someone pays more than $6000 for a motorbike he or she expects to get something pretty special. And ‘Special’ is about the best way to describe the 1000cc Moto Guzzi, latest of the V7 line from Italy, now at Tim Gibbes Motors. The unit has been especially imported for а client who is a confirmed Moto Guzzi rider. The super bike has been specially imported from Italy for Brent Saunders, formerly of Palmerston North and now living in Lower Hutt. There is only one other bike like it in New Zealand. It's the second Moto Guzzi he's owned - and now Tim Gibbes Motors are selling his former 850GT motorcycle for him. He paid about $3000 for the older bike three years ago (it was also specially imported for him). Now it's for sale-$2995. Apart from the fact that Brent loves Moto Guzzi's, there is also the fact that he regards them as an investment. At $6250 for his latest acquisition, he reckons it's still a good deal. And why did he dispose of his older bike? ‘The ashtrays got filled up.’”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
