Nuwyne Te Awe Awe Mohi, the kaikaranga stands to the right of Warren Warbrick (Te Awe Awe) who is playing a pūtatara - a traditional trumpet at the start of a ceremony to raise flags on Waitangi Day in Te Marae o Hine (The Square), Palmerston North. In the distance, city councillors Brent Barrett, Renee Dingwall, Lorna Johnson; Mayor Grant Smith at the second flagpole; Todd Taiepa, Wiremu Te Awe Awe and Nuwyne's son Rakena at the third flagpole; Hon Lees-Galloway at the fourth flagpole.
The ceremony began at 9am and included speeches by Wiremu Kingi Te Awe Awe, Grant Smith - Mayor of Palmerston North, and Hon Iain Lees-Galloway - MP for Palmerston North. The flags raised were the bright red Tanenuiarangi, flanked by the Palmerston North City Council and New Zealand flags.
