Arthur Batchelar served in the Manawatu Mounted Rifles in both the Boer War and World War One. Major Batchelar commanded the troops travelling on the HMS 'Tofua' which stopped in Albany, a rendezvous point for New Zealand troops departing to serve in World War One.
