Fire exercise at Milson Airport
- Description
-
These images were taken for the November 12th, 1978 edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published with the caption: “Billowing flames and columns of dense black smoke shoot skywards as thousands of litres of fuel burns furiously at Palmerston North's Milson airport. Undeterred by the inferno, firemen Alan Peacock (in silver suit) and Bruce Donald march towards the heart of the fire to test the effectiveness of the airport rescue crews’ A/FFF extinguisher foam. The Civil Aviation rescue crews have had this type of foam for a year and know its effectiveness, although men from the Palmerston North fire brigade wanted to get more experience in using it, hence the exercise. The exercise, involving 11,000 litres of contaminated fuel, was conducted on the airport's outskirts on Thursday. The resultant pall of smoke could be seen from all over Palmerston North.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
