This 19 minute video shows a variety of events that employees of the Palmerston North City Council took part in during the 1950s. The film was made by Mr Kenneth Wynks, who worked in the Municipal Electricity Department from 1947-1984.

It begins with the 1952 staff picnic, which was held at the Pohangina Reserve in that year. Scenes in the film from the staff picnic include cricket, strength and agility games, eating ice cream and general fun. The events shown after this picnic are unidentified. They include a rugby game (9.00), shots of caravans traveling from The Square to the camping grounds (12.00), relay races in the camp grounds, views of life at the camp site (12.20), boating down a river with a picnic (13.25) and views of Whanganui city (18.01). Look out for the cigarette relay at minute 17.00, when women run to light cigarettes for gentlemen, who then smoke them as quickly as they can.
