Description

Broadcast on Manawatu People's Radio, 28th January 2025.   Moved into BUPA retirement village from a large three bedroom house. Spent two or three years previously decluttering and downsizing in anticipation of a shift. Has discarded some of her hobbies. Her husband has dementia and is in a care unit in the village. It is important to mix with the community. Barbara has cochlear implants which are removed at night so is reliant on other people in an emergency. She has a St John alarm. The village provides weekly transport into town. She goes out occasionally for meals. There is a residents committee. Various activities are arranged in the village. She can visit her husband at any time but prefers a fixed routine. Care staff are brilliant. She had to look after her husband’s mother for ten years. She has a twin sister. They think alike.  She enjoys socialising in the village. It’s sad when you lose your hearing. Nobody wants to talk to you because it is so hard for them.
