Sheep Truck Accident
- Description
-
These images were taken for the June 25th 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published with the caption “Sheep were killed by the score in this unusual accident near Feilding last week. The accident happened about 6.15 p.m. on Sunday night (June 18) when the trailer, laden with about 280 sheep, slid off the road at the intersection of the Mt Stewart road and Awahuri Road. The truck towing the trailer was making a right turn at the time of the accident when the trailer went off the road, and the sheep crate detached itself from the trailer. The crate crashed into some willow trees, while the trailer finished upside down on the road, still attached to the truck. Some of the sheep were killed outright in the crash, and others had to be destroyed by a veterinary surgeon later because of their injuries. No one was hurt. The truck was owned by Mackie's Transport Ltd, of Waipukarau. The sheep crate was wrecked, but the trailer and the truck appeared to be undamaged.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
