This image was taken for a story that ran in The Manawatu Evening Standard on 25 October 1960 "This photograph, taken on Mr. A. Van Echten's farm near Palmerston North shows some of the stages of a poultry farmer's work. The farmer begins his flock of birds as day-old chicks and keeps them non-productively for four months. At this time they begin laying and are kept in special hen houses. This photo shows the four-month-old about-to-lay pullets. There are about four and a half thousand fowls on Mr. van Echten's farm. They are kept here for about a year before being sold for killing."
