This image was published in the November 12th, 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper with the caption: “Reg Cook (left) dives through on the inside of Bryce Platt in the race for the line. He got there first – again.”
An excerpt from the article read: “Spectators saw some hectic racing at Manfield recently - and the course promoters greeted the fine sunny conditions with a gasp of relief. After having last season's racing almost totally ruled out by rain they were literally praying for the sun to bring out the crowds and help swell the badly-depressed coffers of Manfeild [sic]. And there was somе memorable racing on that perfect day, even if the glamour Union Travel Formula Pacific event was a fizzer because of the non-appearance of most of its expected entrants.
Recently the long awaited clash in the Ford Escort Sport 1600 Series between one of New Zealand's top women racing drivers, Elvie Williams and the up-and- coming Australian, Robyп Hamilton. Elvie, a petite strawberry blonde from Whangaparaoа, has been racing for four years and is an experienced driver on the Manfeild course, so it was thought by many critics that she may just have an edge over Robyn Hamilton.”
