- Description
-
Part 1 of 2 Jacquie Nutt set up a human milk bank in Palmerston North.
She had already created two milk banks in South Africa.
She moved to New Zealand in 2015 as a lactation consultant.
Jackie says breastfeeding is natural but also learned.
COVID made life harder for mothers needing support.
A Facebook post helped launch the milk bank in 2020.
The milk bank uses a kitchen at the birthing centre.
Donated milk is pasteurised before hospital use.
Most milk goes to premature and sick babies.
Breast milk helps protect babies from serious illness.
About 60 babies a month receive donor milk.
Jacquie hopes the milk bank will continue for years.
