This image was taken (but not published) by the Evening Standard between the 6th and 7th of January 1981. It depicts a moment of action from the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield 2-day match between the Wellington and Auckland women’s cricket teams. Wellington won by 10 wickets.
Match report by David Ogilvie: “Bevege scores 'first' ton.
BARBARA BEVEGE has scored hundreds for New Zealand and for Wellington in minor matches, but until yesterday she hadn't scored a Hallyburton-Johnstone n-Johnstone cricket tournament ton, although she has been playing in the tournament since 1967-68.
Bevege, who has been having an outstanding tournament on the firm and smooth Palmerston North wickets, belted the Auckland attack for 123 yesterday as Wellington revelled in the hunt for bonus points in an attempt to make up 16stground on Canterbury. Wellington scored 313 for seven wickets in its 70 overs, thus creating a very interesting situation. Wellington's match was against Auckland, and some several hundred metres away, Canterbury was trying very hard to maintain the gap between the two.…
Auckland trailed Wellington by 135 runs at stumps after playing out one over in its second innings, so there was a definite chance of the outright to Wellington there.
Auckland batted usefully to reach 178 for six wickets, with Heather Shale starring with 63. Maureen Peters, one of the more persistent bowlers, at the tournament, took four wickets.
Bevege was in savage form, having good partnerships with Mary Harris and Prue Hyman, who has struck very good form in the latter part of the tournament. Later on Cheryl Henshilwood played another good innings for 49 not out. Bevege has now scored 435 runs in the tournament, well ahead of Gail Tipa (Otago) and Nicki Turner (Canterbury).
…
Perhaps this is the stage to issue some kudos to Ken Timms and his ground staff for their work on the wickets. With the exception of the first match, when rain fell heavily in the middle, the wickets have been flawless, and the runs have mostly come without too much effort.”
