- Description
-
Part 1 of 6. Mark Kilsby developed a lifelong love of theatre through his mother’s acting interests.
As a child he attended plays in Palmerston North, including Shakespeare productions.
He learned speech and drama, once known as elocution, and gained ATCL qualifications.
Severe asthma prevented him from committing to acting during his younger years.
After treatment with steroids, his health improved and he returned to the stage.
His first major role was in “Move Over Mrs Markham” in Taihape.
Although terrified before performances, he discovered he loved acting.
He enjoyed portraying characters very different from his real personality.
Kilsby became active in one-act play competitions around New Zealand.
He twice reached national finals with productions in Waiouru and Christchurch.
He believes theatre teaches teamwork, confidence and lifelong communication skills.
At 80, he still mentors young performers and values connections across generations.
