“Grey Street Marches On – Down Comes Another Barrier”
- Description
-
These images were taken for the June 11th 1978, edition of the Tribune weekly newspaper, the first of which was published.
An excerpt from the article read: “With a roar and a shove, down comes one of the last buildings obstructing progress on the Palmerston North City Council's extensions to Grey Street. This building formerly owned by New Zealand Electrical Traders was flattened only recently as the advancing four-lane-wide road reached Taonui Street. (The new road can be seen in the background of the picture.) Work on the Grey Street extension has leap-frogged the former site of Electrical Traders, and the brand new road should be open for traffic in October, says the city engineer, Mr G. W. N. Johansen. The Grey Street extension represents one of the last stages in the city's transportation ‘box’ which is designed to take traffic pressure away from the centre of the city.
Work on the Grey Street extension began at the end of last year, when a two-storey building was demolished in Rangitikei Street. However, Mr Johansen said work on the first stages of the transportation plan began after the scheme was approved in 1969. (Pitt Street had been widened to four lanes before that.) In 1971 traffic was banished from the inner Square, advancing the implementation of the ‘box’ system.”
These images form part of the Manawatū Evening Standard Negative Collection. Unfortunately, only negatives between April and December 1978 are held.
